A 500-metre dive watch specified by a working saturation diver, with a quartz movement chosen on purpose: the Diver One is the tool watch with its priorities showing.

The story

Scurfa is Paul Scurfa, a commercial saturation diver in the North Sea offshore industry, and the Diver One is the watch he designed for that work. The checklist is the job's: a 40mm steel case rated to 500 metres, a heliox escape valve for saturation diving, a domed sapphire crystal, drilled lugs, a 7mm screw-down crown running four gaskets, and Grade A BGW9 lume on the dial, hands and bezel so the watch reads in the dark at a glance. The movement is Swiss quartz — in the current production an ETA F06 calibre with thermo-compensation and an end-of-life indicator — chosen because a working diver's watch has to survive knocks, start instantly and never need winding with gloves on.

Photographed twice for the daily story series, both times on the steel bracelet rather than the maker's rubber strap: once in flat light, where the dial sits matt blue and the white sword hands do all the talking, and once in a car, where the same dial picks up a brushed sheen. The judgement worth recording is how little of the design is styling. Next to the heritage reissues that dominate the dive-watch market, the D1-500 is a current-production tool specified against a real decompression schedule — and it is priced like equipment, not memorabilia.

What to check before buying

  • Battery age and the EOL indicator. The quartz calibres signal a dying battery by skipping seconds. Ask when the battery was last changed; on a 500-metre watch, who changed it matters as much as when.
  • Bezel action and insert. The bezel should run 120 firm clicks with no back-play. Current production uses a ceramic insert; earlier runs used aluminium — know which you are pricing.
  • Gaskets and the heliox valve. The depth rating is a seals claim. Before any real diving, budget for a pressure test and gasket service.
  • Bracelet and clasp. Photographed here on the steel bracelet: check the clasp closes positively and the link screws are undisturbed.
