Photo: ShopGoodwill listing (seller: Goodwill of North Georgia)
The listing title sells a jewel count — "Bulova Automatic 35 Jewels." The dial underneath says Oceanographer.
Verdict
| What it is | Bulova Oceanographer dual day-date diver — ribbed dark-blue dial, gold-tone cushion case, two-tone bracelet |
| Price | $9.99, 1 bid, spotted Thu Oct 29, 2026, 2:01 PM PT |
| Where | ShopGoodwill auction #281889575 — ends Sun Nov 1, 2026, 6:52 PM PT |
| The angle | A named diver with its depth rating printed on the dial, filed under a title that counts jewels instead |
| Verdict | The seller calls it functional and complete, and declares the wear. At a $9.99 open, the name on the dial does the work. |
What it is
Read the title, then read the dial. The title is parts-bin language — "Bulova Automatic 35 Jewels" could describe a shelf of watches. The dial is specific: Oceanographer, Bulova's diver name, over a ribbed dark-blue dial with a dual day-date (shown set to SAM) and "333 FEET" printed at six — the period depth rating, roughly 100 metres, stated where a buyer would look for it. Gold-tone cushion case, two-tone bracelet.
Listed by Goodwill of North Georgia. The seller describes the watch as functional and complete, with visible wear on the case and clasp. As with every ShopGoodwill lot, it is untested and sold as-is — "functional" is the seller's word, quoted here as one.
Why it matters
Generic titles are where named models go to be ignored. A jewel count is a movement statistic; an Oceanographer is a watch with a lineage, a dial worth photographing and a rating worth printing. The gap between those two descriptions is the entire Finds lane: the listing did the hiding, and the dial did the telling. The declared wear keeps the judgement simple — nothing here depends on the watch being better than described.

What to check before bidding
- The day-date is the function to test. A dual day-date should advance cleanly at midnight and quickset if fitted. The listing does not demonstrate either — price in the uncertainty.
- "Functional" is the seller's word. It is a better starting point than silence, but it is not a timing measurement. Budget for a service on any vintage automatic bought untested.
- Gold-tone cases show their wear at the edges. The seller declares visible wear on the case and clasp; on a plated cushion case, worn-through edges are cosmetic and permanent.
- Do not dive on a dial word. "333 FEET" is a period rating printed decades ago. Gaskets age; treat the watch as splash-vulnerable until a watchmaker pressure-tests it.
- Bracelet fit. Two-tone bracelets of the era run short and links are scarce. Check the listed length against your wrist before bidding.
