Grade 2 titanium, a sapphire crystal and a three-year coin cell: the UltraHex is the digital watch rebuilt in the materials of a mechanical tool watch.
Verdict
| What it is | RZE UltraHex Titanium Digital (UTD-8000) — 42mm Grade 2 titanium case with UltraHex hardening, digital module |
| Price | $279 — RZE list for the UTD-8000 (per WatchTime's UTD-8080 launch report, Oct 2026) |
| Availability | Succeeded by the UTD-8080 (announced Oct 2026); UTD-8000 owners can have the new module fitted for $100 from January 2027 |
| The angle | The bezel says what the watch is: TITANIUM at the top, ULTRAHEX at the bottom, screws at the quarters. |
| Verdict | The module is ordinary on purpose. The watch around it is not. |
The story
RZE is a Singapore independent built on titanium, and the UltraHex takes the digital watch — a format the industry makes in resin — and machines it from Grade 2 titanium instead, with the brand's UltraHex surface-hardening treatment and a sapphire crystal. The dial carries the brief in print: SHOCK RESISTANT, WR 20BAR. The module does the standard digital work — day and date, dual time, a 1/100-second chronograph, alarms — on a CR2032 coin cell rated past three years. The whole watch weighs about 52 grams.
Photographed twice for the daily story series: once with the negative display lit by low sun, once straight-on with the positive display. The judgement worth recording is what happened next: when RZE replaced this module with its first in-house one (the UTD-8080, announced October 2026), it made the new module backwards-compatible and offered existing UTD-8000 owners the swap for $100. Digital watches are the most disposable objects in the industry; this one was designed to be upgraded instead of replaced.

What to check before buying
- Know which module is inside. From January 2027, UTD-8000s in the wild may carry either the original module or the RZE-8080 upgrade. The functions differ; ask which one a given watch has.
- Display contrast in real light. Negative displays photograph dramatically and read worse in flat light. The positive-display version is the easier daily wear.
- Bezel screws and caseback. The case is screwed together at visible points. Check the screw heads are clean — chewed heads mean improvised tools.
- Battery age. Three-plus years is the rating. A cheap coin cell decides whether a used example is a bargain or a errand.
