Microbrands buy movements. RZE designed its own digital module instead — and made it fit the watch it replaces.

| Verdict | The upgrade path is the story. A digital watch designed not to be thrown away. |
What it is
Start with the module. The RZE-8080 is RZE's first digital module developed in-house, and it adds the functions the UTD-8000 lacked: dual time, a multi-alarm and a countdown timer, alongside a 1/100-second stopwatch and a full auto calendar through 2099, behind a high-contrast FSTN display with a backlight. Digital modules are almost always bought in; designing one is the step microbrands skip.
The launch model, the UTD-8080-ST, keeps the UTD hardware: a Grade 2 titanium case with RZE's UltraHex hardening, finished here in white Cerakote with black accents, a flat sapphire crystal, and 200 metres of water resistance. The whole watch weighs 51.9 grams on its strap. Power is a standard CR2032 coin cell, rated past three years — no charging cable, no account, no app.

Why it matters
Two decisions separate this from the digital crowd. First, the module is theirs — the functions, the display layout and the upgrade path are under the brand's control. Second, it is backwards-compatible: from January 2027, UTD-8000 owners can have the new module fitted for $100 instead of buying a new watch. Digital watches are the most disposable objects in the industry; this one was designed to be upgraded instead of replaced, and that is a judgement the hardware backs up.

What to check before buying
- Deliveries start November 2026. The $399 buys a watch in the delivery queue, not one on the shelf today — order on that basis.
- It is a large case, lightly carried. 42mm across and 49.5mm lug-to-lug, but 51.9 grams in titanium. Judge it by weight, not just diameter.
- White Cerakote is a finish, not a colour through the metal. It is hard-wearing, but a deep knock can show titanium underneath. That is the trade for the look.
- Already own a UTD-8000? The $100 module upgrade from January 2027 is the cheaper route to the same functions — you do not need the new watch.
