A kaleidoscope for a dial — the Borel Cocktail tells time with turning patterned discs, no hands, no numerals.

| What it is | Jules Borel Cocktail kaleidoscope watch — 17-jewel mechanical movement, exhibition back, gold-tone case on a Speidel U.S.A. expansion band |

| The angle | The Cocktail replaces hands with rotating patterned discs, so the dial is a slow kaleidoscope that happens to tell the time |
| Verdict | A novelty that is genuinely mechanical, at an opening bid with no bids yet. The running state is not stated — bid as if a service is included in the price, because it may be. |
What it is
The Cocktail is Jules Borel’s party trick, built properly. Instead of hands, patterned discs turn beneath the dial, and the time is read against the moving pattern — a kaleidoscope first, a watch by convention. Underneath the trick sits a 17-jewel mechanical movement, visible through the transparent exhibition case back the listing calls out. The case is gold-tone — the listing specifies gold-plated metal — and the watch rides on a Speidel U.S.A. expansion band, marked Speidel U.S.A. Pat. 3587226 per the listing.
The running state is not stated in the listing, and the Instagram caption said so plainly. The listing gives the weight at 25.7 g and describes the dial as a kaleidoscope optical design; everything beyond that is in the photos. ShopGoodwill items are untested beyond what the seller states and sold as-is — here, the seller states function not at all, which is its own kind of statement.
Why it matters
Most novelty watches are quartz shells around a printed gimmick. The Cocktail is the other kind: a real mechanical movement doing unnecessary, delightful work. Borel built these as conversation pieces for the cocktail hour, and the disc display has no modern equivalent at this price — nobody makes a kaleidoscope watch now. Finding one unbid at its $99.99 opening, correctly titled with the movement and band named, is the Finds lane working as intended: the value is in knowing what the turning discs are.

What to check before bidding
- Running state not stated means service first. A 17-jewel movement of this age that has not been described as running should be bid as a project until a watchmaker says otherwise.
- The discs are the watch. Misaligned or slipping discs turn the kaleidoscope into a puzzle. Study the listing photos for disc position and ask questions before bidding — the seller invites them.
- Gold plate, not gold. The listing says gold-plated metal. Wear on the case edges will show base metal; check the photos at full size.
- Expansion bands size themselves — to a point. The Speidel band flexes, but a stretched vintage expansion band is a replacement cost. The listing photos show its condition.
