Kiwame Tokyo MUNE USUKI — Asakusa, written on the dial

A Tokyo brand named for its own district: the USUKI's 12 o'clock index is the ridge of the Kaminarimon gate, and its seconds hand ends in that gate's roofline.

What it is Kiwame Tokyo ASAKUSA MUNE USUKI — 38mm steel field watch, ivory Usuki dial, Miyota 9039 automatic

Availability Direct from Kiwame Tokyo, in small batches
The angle Asakusa's temple architecture abstracted into dial furniture — a ridge-beam index, a roofline seconds tip — rather than printed on as a picture.
Verdict The story is in the metalwork of the numerals and indexes, not in a souvenir illustration.

The story

Kiwame Tokyo is a small independent based in Asakusa, Tokyo's old temple district, and the MUNE collection is its field watch. "Mune" is the ridge beam along a roof's spine; on the USUKI it becomes the sculpted 12 o'clock index, and the seconds hand's luminous tip is shaped after the sweeping roof of the Kaminarimon gate at Sensō-ji. The dial — Usuki is a traditional pale yellow-ivory — carries applied three-dimensional Arabic numerals, syringe hands, and two colours of luminous paint, blue and green. Underneath the architecture is a plain, well-judged specification: a 38 × 9.5mm steel case, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, 100 metres of water resistance, and a regulated Miyota 9039 automatic.

Photographed in hand for the daily story series, on its black Italian calf strap. The judgement: most place-themed watches print the place on the dial and call it storytelling. This one rebuilds the place into the parts of the watch you actually touch and read — the index you orient by, the hand you follow. Dress-watch thickness with a field watch's rating is the second, quieter argument.

What to check before buying

  • Batch availability. Kiwame Tokyo sells direct in small runs; a sold-out variant is a wait, not a discount opportunity elsewhere.
  • The numerals are applied, not printed. On any example, check alignment of the raised Arabic numerals under a loupe — the three-dimensional dial is the watch's value.
  • Regulated is the brand's claim. The 9039 leaves Miyota at a wide stated tolerance; Kiwame regulates it in-house. A watch that runs at the edge of Miyota's stock tolerance deserves the question.
  • Strap taper. 20mm to 16mm is a dress taper on a field case. Replacement straps need the taper to look right.
