The White Birch turned the lights off: same Evolution 9 case, same 9SA5 — the birch forests of the Hiraniwa Plateau re-cut in black, at night.

| The angle | The birch texture reads as grain in daylight and as shadow at distance — the close and wide photographs here are the same watch. |
| Verdict | The 9SA5 is the movement argument; the dial is the reason it gets worn. |
The story
The SLGH017 shares its Evolution 9 case and its calibre with the White Birch, and changes the light. The dial's vertical grain — the bark of the white birch forests near the Shizukuishi studio — is rendered in black, for the same plateau at night. The case is high-intensity titanium, 40mm with wide lugs and a low centre of gravity, finished in alternating Zaratsu polish and hairline brushing. Inside is Calibre 9SA5: a 36,000 vph automatic with Grand Seiko's Dual Impulse Escapement, a free-sprung balance and twin barrels, good for 80 hours and rated at +5 to −3 seconds a day.
Photographed twice for the daily story series: close, where the grain is a texture, and wide, where it disappears into a black dial and the wide Evolution 9 hands and diamond-cut indexes do the reading. That double life is the judgement. Most textured dials are a close-up pleasure and a wrist-distance blur; this one is composed at both ranges, and the titanium keeps a flagship movement at 114 grams.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the reference. The birch dial exists as the steel White Birch (SLGH005), the Spring Drive White Birch (SLGA009) and this titanium Night Birch. Case material and calibre separate them; price accordingly.
- Run the reserve down once. The 9SA5's 80 hours is the calibre's headline. A watch that stops well short needs a service conversation, not a discount shrug.
- Inspect the polished facets. Evolution 9 cases depend on crisp transitions between Zaratsu polish and hairline brushing. Soft edges mean polishing.
- Check the date change. It should snap over cleanly around midnight, not creep.
